Noel Hodgson
I have had the great pleasure to design both of Noel Hodgson’s poetry books, Below Flodden and Dancing Over Cheviot. Book design is a refreshingly different process to the usual work and a great pleasure for the typographer.

Dancing Over Cheviot

Many of the poems in Dancing Over Cheviot are populated by the men and women who helped shape previous centuries and who have left their indelible markings upon our landscape and culture; from those nameless early ancestors whose traces haunt our countryside, through the deeds of kings and men-at-arms, to Northumberland’s less triumphed sons and daughters whose own lives are also worthy of celebration. With warmth and wisdom, Noel reveals his fascination and affection for the land of his birth. Dancing Over Cheviot is a journey that Noel continues to enjoy, inviting readers to join him as he goes.
The layout built on the style established for Noel’s first book. It was a larger format for a start and I changed the font to Bembo for a more traditional feel, having used Avenir in Below Flodden. The picture were of a better quality too.
Above you can see a visual style established for the website and posters, the poetry coming out of yet a part of the Northumbrian landscape.

Below Flodden

Below Flodden is poet and author Noel Hodgson’s debut collection, first published in 2003 and, having proven hugely popular, now into its second printing. Filled with much local insight, rich historical detail and wonderfully lyrical flights of fancy, Noel’s poems – and the simple yet effective commentaries upon how they came to be written – are by turn evocative, informative and wise.
A native Northumbrian, Noel Hodgson takes his readers on a unique voyage of discovery and exploration, high into the Cheviot hills, far into the past and deep into one’s own mind, heart and soul.

Noel’s Website

Noel needed a website to publicise his book and act as a focus for sales. I kept it simple and straightforward. We decided against online retail facilities unless demand showed a necessity.
Below Flodden and Dancing Over Cheviot are available at numerous outlets throughout the north-east. You can also order a copy from your local bookshop (quoting title, author, publisher and ISBN number). Alternatively, visit www.noelhodgson.co.uk for further details and mail order options.
